Can't Win With the Shin

I'm taking a little break from running. I've been getting mild shin splints that keep showing up. Actually, just in my left leg. I've never gotten shin splints before, so this is new for me and I don't quite know what to do about it. Whenever I get the shin pain, I take off a few days of running, then get back to it and feel fine. But the fact that it keeps coming back is getting annoying. It's been going on for over 3 months. Ugh. I read that if you keep running with the shin splints, then it could turn into a stress fracture and you would have to take off months from running. I don't want that to happen. So I'm taking off at least a week and then coming back slowly. I think part of my problem is when I get back to running I want to start off doing too much--like I'm trying to make up for lost time. This time I'm going to keep my running slow and easy. Don't even worry about distance or speed (for now). Of course, in the back of my mind, there's the, "Uh, I have to run a 50k in 4 months" thought. But I'm going to try to not even think about that for the next couple weeks. If you have any suggestions for shin splints, I'd love to hear them! :)

Side note: I recommend dailymile.com for any runners out there. My sister-in-law, Jen, recommended it to Melanie, Adam, and me and we've had fun sharing our training with each other. It's like facebook for runners (they have other sports, too--cycling, swimming, walking, yoga, weights, etc). It's a great way to keep track of workouts and get motivated by other runners!

Here are a few pictures of Travis and me at Six Flags in Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium!

I'm pretty sure I caught the best fish in the sea. :)
